2025 Happenings Open Call!
Hello to anyone interested in doing an event in our Backspace! We are thrilled to have moved into this expanded storefront in December 2022 which functions as a multipurpose space — shop in the front, and all types of ✨happenings✨ in the back. In the past two years we've been hosting local artist markets, live music, poetry readings, weekly yoga classes, crafting workshops, kids' events, private parties, and so much more! We're excited to see what new ideas can come to life here in the future....
And so, we're inviting folks to submit ideas they'd like to bring to fruition at some point in the coming year! This could include....
Artists & makers who'd like to participate in our pop-up markets (which is also the entry point for possibly bringing work onto the shop shelves)
Musicians looking to perform a show
Performance artists — dance, movement, theater, etc — interested in a performance space
Artists interested in leading workshops or classes for the community
And so much more!
A few things to be aware of for this Open Call....
Submissions will be accepted from March 15th to 31st, 2025. After the end of the submission window, we will be excited to review all the entries and will send replies & follow-ups by mid-May. Our programming evolves organically throughout the year, creating new opportunities to collaborate with artists and makers along the way. We’re excited to read ideas from across the community and beyond during this open call so we can connect, co-create, and begin planning meaningful new offerings for the year ahead!
All open call applicants will be notified by May 15th as to whether their idea feels like a possible good fit for our programming in the coming year. For the ideas we do see as potential happenings, our reply will include an invitation and timeframe for holding follow-up discussions based on the scope and nature of the idea. All other applicants will also hear back from us by May 15th and will be invited to reapply in future open calls if they wish!
The submission form is live until March 31st and can be accessed HERE!

Playful Voices
Playful Voices is a 4-session workshop series for *Trans people seeking to (re)connect with their bodies and voices. Using games, voice techniques, embodiment practices, and community building exercises, participants will spend time reflecting on what they want their relationship to their bodies and voices to feel like and how to take action to make their dreams a reality. By being in community with other Trans people, we seek to create a space of T4T wellness and belonging. At the end of the series, participants will be invited to share either a piece of writing or art with the group, preferably something spoken or performed to practice the skills of embodiment learned throughout our time together.
*Trans is used expansively to include anyone who identifies outside the western gender binary. If that's you, this space is for you! This is not meant to gatekeep, but rather create a space where gender expansive people can connect with their voices and bodies outside the cisgender gaze.
Dates: April 2nd, 9th, 16th & 23rd
Time: 7- 9 pm
Cost: sliding scale $25-50 per session.

In mid-October 2023, Sophia Alhadeff (she/they) and Shug Munic (they/them) met at a Jewish Voice for Peace meeting and began organizing a community quilt. Together, they agreed that the quilt would be a site for grief and a memorial to the ongoing violence at the hands of the US and Israeli Empire.
Olam HaBa translates to “the world to come.” Drawing from the history and legacy of community activist quilts, this quilt acts as a communal practice of envisioning the world we wish to live in and create with our communities. The invitation extended to anyone who identifies as anti-zionist to respond to the question: How is Jewish safety and Palestinian liberation inherently intertwined?
After putting out the call for quilt blocks at the end of November 2023, they received 36 blocks from the US and Canada. Quilt blocks were made at workshops in Minneapolis & Chicago as well as individually. As you engage with this piece, we invite you to hold the question “What is the connection between urgency and steadfastness?” as exemplified by the quilting process during an ongoing genocide.
Please join us to view the Olam HaBa quilt, speak to organizers about how the project came to be, and raise funds for crucial mutual aid resources in Brooklyn and Gaza. All funds will be split between Equality for Flatbush and The Sanabel Team.
The organizers are also inviting folks to donate pins to the quilt to be adorned on the blank borders. Pins can be related to any land back & solidarity movement as liberation is interconnected. Your pin will be permanently donated to the quilt.
The quilt will be displayed at The Brooklyn Artery on March 23rd, 2025, from 2 pm to 5 pm EST. The speakers will share about the process between 2:30pm-3:30pm. We hope you join us to continue building community across the country and envisioning the world to come! RSVP HERE.

NECK DOWN Synopsis:
Set in New York City in 2021 at a lot-viewing appointment the morning before an ancient coin auction, three characters duet with the voices in their heads about lottery winnings, caskets, sex fantasies, delusions of grandeur, Diaghilev, and Big Oil Banks, and mount a tragicomic class stand-off and a toast to the heroism of broke artists.
Directed by Princess Grace Award-winner Marissa Joyce Stamps ("Being Up in Here and All the Other Businesses that Don't Concern You"), with a cast led by Cristina Pitter ("BONDiNG" on Netflix, "Behind the Sheet"), this production synthesizes the paranoid, righteous, and surreal national consciousnesses that have fermented since the COVID-19 pandemic. With the punishing gig economy under the microscope, the play explores the relentless spirit of artists and the heroic force necessary to lead a culture away from calamity.

Are you a shower singer? Aspiring karaoke star? Someone who just loves to sing but wants more access to their voice? This workshop is for you!
Singing is a practice that has greater purpose than mastery or high level performance. It’s a human impulse, available to anyone who wants to release emotion through sound and body. Singing is proven to decrease stress, help your sense of belonging and connection, and even improve overall breathing and lung function. The principles learned in vocal training can be applied across many areas of your life to improve overall well being.
In this workshop we will explore the fundamentals of singing and how it works, sonically and inside of our bodies. This will include exploration of diaphragmatic breath, the forming of vowel sounds and shapes to produce sound, resonance in our bodies and in space and some light vocal practice to see how your singing can be further unlocked!
Wed November 13, 7:30-9:30pm
